CPC THIS WEEK
THE E-NEWSLETTER OF CHRIST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH September 29, 2017

“An Appreciation for All”

In 1992 the think-tank at Hallmark came up with a new reason for us “to care enough to send the very best” - Clergy Appreciation Day; the second Sunday in October. Since then it has grown to include the entire month and is more commonly known as “Pastor Appreciation Month.”

The bottom line of absolute truth in any church is this – behind every pastor(s) there are many individuals who contribute to the lifeblood of ministry and overall health of the local church. So, until, Hallmark gets on board with a complementary (and complimentary) campaign to honor those individuals, we would like October at CPC to be known as “Ministry Appreciation Month.” But you may have to handle the whole card thing on your own!

It is a privilege to be called your pastor. And one way in which you could truly bless and encourage me would be to take some time this month to appreciate the many members and friends who serve Christ and His Kingdom both inside and outside of our church. Along with ALL of those folks who regularly sacrifice in time and treasure I would also like to include our missionaries who labor in faith away from family and friends.

Have you ever stopped to consider the amount of ministry hours and people necessary to do what happens at CPC on a weekly basis? It’s staggering! I would begin a list here but two things cause me to hesitate. One, I’ll undoubtedly skip over someone; that’s never good to do! And, two, I would probably embarrass many – if not all, by providing their names. Instead, I’ll give you some hints by naming various ministry areas (if I failed to mention an area please let me know; if you need a name – just give me a call!):

CPC Ministries:

  • Nursery Workers
  • Sunday School Teachers
  • Children’s Church Teachers
  • Bible Study Leaders
  • Life Group Leaders
  • Church Officers
  • Music Ministry
  • Audio/Visual Ministry
  • Administrative Staff (including finances)
  • CPC Committees
  • Custodial Staff
  • Greeting Ministry
  • Hospitality Ministry
  • Women’s Ministry
  • Youth Ministry

And Outreach Ministries like:

  • Birthright
  • Community Christian School
  • Rock Solid
  • Victory Lane Camp
  • Boys and Girls Club
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Local Food Pantries

As you can see, there are many, many folks who foster and nurture a ministry environment that “I appreciate” in my pastoral pursuits. How blessed am I to be here!

Eternally Grateful for all of you – and very, very appreciative!

! THE CHURCH IN THE WORLD ! Christian Academy Banned for Alleged ''Brainwashing''

28 September 2017

Government officials in China's central Henan province closed down a Christian-run institution dedicated to teaching children good morals, with allegations that its religious component was "brainwashing" the students. On September 14th, Ms. Zhu reported that national security officers had confiscated the textbooks that were being used for the home-based academy which offered theology classes for children.

The national security officers who arrived at Ms. Zhu's home were acting on a tip they received. In addition to closing down the academy and confiscating the textbooks, the officers seized other items belonging to the church -- including a computer. Since the ban on the academy, however, the officials have not harassed the church again.

Such prohibitions on teaching religion to children are common in China, despite the Chinese Constitution's guarantee that all citizens have the right to enjoy freedom of belief. Although threats from the government are strong, many Chinese believers insist on taking their children to church and other Christian-related activities. In response, the government has further enforced its prohibition on children attending religious events in the revised edition of its "Regulations on Religious Affairs" which is scheduled to take effect next February.

May God honour the faithfulness of Ms. Zhu, as well as the efforts of the parents who are wanting to raise their children in the ways of the Lord by instilling spiritual truths deep within their hearts. Pray that these believers will not be discouraged by the strict regulations but rather further compelled to obey His command by teaching their children His Word at every opportunity -- so when they are old, they will not depart from it. Petition the Lord to also change the hearts of those in governing authority, that they may be moved by the powerful witness of these Chinese believers.
