When The Heart Struggles To Hold More Tears

I don’t want or need to see more pictures. I don’t want or need to read more stories. I don’t want or need to live with the prospect of the next shooting – be it a school, church, or concert. And, I certainly don’t want or need to hear another debate about gun control! My heart, like yours, is full, and breaking.

The compound fractures from Genesis 3 continue to echo in our world. And along with those echoes a penetrating truth pierces through the darkness of falleness, “It wasn’t supposed to be this way.”

But it is.

And, until sin meets its final death and destruction our world will continue to display the reality of the lyric we sing,

In every dark, distressful hour When sin and Satan join their power

There can be no question that this “joining” is behind the dreadful events of Wednesday; and every event like it. Whenever, in the sovereignty of God, the “thief comes to steal and kill and destroy” we will, regrettably read more stories like this. Satan is liar and murderer. Knowing his ultimate outcome, his desire is not only to bring others with him to hell, but to bring that same hell to earth. That is the reality of what we see in places like Parkland, Florida.

But that’s not the only story. Let’s go back to complete the lyric above,

In every dark, distressful hour
When sin and Satan join their power
Let this, dear hope repel the dart
That Jesus bears us on His heart, on His heart

Sounding forth from the lament of loss in Genesis comes also the song of the Savior – though bruised in his heal, he will trample underground and crush the head of His, and our, enemy. “For, lo, his doom is sure!” Our prayer is that the love of Jesus will reach all those who suffered. That He will bear them on His heart. It is the light of Christ and His Gospel that dispels the darkness. It can only be those knowing this light and this love that can share the hope of life over death; of love over lies. It is His Bride - the Church - that can sing salvation’s victorious song to the lost and hurting.

The events of this past week should also drive us to our knees to rest and rejoice in the prayer found in scripture’s final words

He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.

In the last two months, church-planting efforts in Kampala, Uganda, have gained momentum. A small weekly Bible study has grown into two groups, each with an average attendance of eight to 14 people. One of those is an outgoing young woman who, after just a few weeks in the study, came up to the Ugandan pastoral assistant and said that she wanted to receive Christ as Lord and Savior. She is now following Jesus and growing in her faith.

A Muslim woman has also been drawn to the Wednesday night study. She has been engaged in the teaching, asking deep questions about having a relationship with God. A young married man is probably the most vocal in the group. He is passionate about Jesus, but has not been exposed to sound biblical teaching. He has brought many questions that have served as discussion topics for the studies, and it is clear that the Lord is growing him spiritually.

Your prayers and gifts ensure that the truth of the gospel can be brought to people around the world. God is changing lives and churches are being established because of your generosity. Thank you.
