Praying With Paul

Happy New Year - it’s 2018!  We can look forward to another year of God’s good grace based on His faithfulness in the past and promise of the same for the future.  We do so because of our biblically informed understanding of His Sovereignty – He is in control.  But along with our appreciation for God’s rule and reign in our lives we also know that wedded to His sovereignty is our responsibility.  Simply put, “the God who ordains the ends ordains the means to those ends.”  And included in those ordained means is the grace of prayer.  Paul knew this truth and prayer saturated his life and ministry, specifically, prayer for the Church.

Starting this Sunday I will begin a new preaching series on Paul’s Prayers for the Church.  In virtually every letter that Paul wrote to the church communities of his day he included prayers for them.  And, I believe that an examination of those prayers will be beneficial for our church today.  As you read his epistles, Paul is addressing real issues affecting each individual church - Christ and Salvation; the Formation and Function of the Church; Christ’s Return; Christian Life and the World; and others.

Though our world has certainly changed since the missionary efforts of Paul, the church and its mission has stayed the same.  The challenges that confronted the church at Corinth, Ephesus, or even Rome, confront the church at Richmond. The promise that Christ would build His church remains the same the whether that church existed in Asia Minor or Wayne County.  And with all of this the greatest need of Paul’s day is the same for our day – the need for prayer, prayer of every kind.  The purpose and practice of prayer is made clear to us through the biblical examples of intercessory prayer by both God, the Son and God, the Holy Spirit.  As evidenced by his own letters, prayer was the lifeline of Paul to the various churches he planted.  Prayer is the lifeline of the church.  It connects us to one another on earth; it connects us to the King of the Church in heaven.

This Sunday I will begin with an introductory message for the series based on the salutation given by Paul in virtually all of his letters – that of “Grace and Peace.”  So, as I have done in the past, I ask again for your prayers in my preparation and preaching in this series.  It is my hope that the time we spend together looking at Paul’s prayers early in this new year will provide us with renewed encouragement and enthusiasm for the Kingdom work that the Lord of the Church will bring our way in the days and months ahead.

 Praying with You for 2018!

Song of the Month – “We Look To You” – from “Prayers of the Saints” by Sovereign Grace

About this album:

“The prayers of the saints in Revelation are the cries of God’s people for his intervention, justice, and deliverance.  They reflect the ‘already but not yet’ nature of living between the first and second coming of Christ.  Christ has truly triumphed over Satan, death, and sin, but a full and final deliverance awaits his return, when he will destroy every rule and every authority and power (1 Cor.15:24).

The songs on this album include songs of praise and adoration, but we’ve focused on giving expression to the confession, longing, intercession, and anticipation that should characterize the songs of ‘elect exiles’ (1 Pet.  1:1).  We have a heavenly home that’s been secured for us through the substitutionary sacrifice of Jesus, whose death paid the full penalty for our sins.”

But we’re not home yet.

A great new album to add to – or start – your worship collection!!  Here are the link and the lyrics to this month’s song, “We Look To You”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iia_owSfv-8

 “We Look To You”

Deliver us from evil Lord

We sojourn in a broken world

Though evil hands give rise to war

Remind us this is not our home

We look to You we look to You

Sovereign King of all the earth

We look to You we look to You

In Your strength we will endure

In Your strength we will endure

Deliver us from evil Lord

Our hearts so quickly run astray

Temptation crouching at the door

To turn us from the narrow way

We look to You we look to You

Christ the conquering Son of God

We look to You we look to You

Lord complete what You’ve begun

Lord complete what You’ve begun

Deliver us from evil Lord

The devil’s seeking to devour

With trembling hearts we hear his roar

But Your strong arm will crush his pow’r

We look to You we look to You

Come and end his earthly reign

We look to You we look to You

Lord deliver us we pray

We look to You we look to You

You will come again to reign

We look to You we look to You

All the earth will bow in praise
